Of all the types of kitchen fires you can experience, grease fires may be the most dangerous of all, as grease makes everything burn faster. At FP Property Restoration, our fire damage pros have certainly cleaned up their fair share of grease fires over time, but fortunately, we also know how to stop them before they get out of control. Keep reading for more on what you should do if a grease fire starts in your home, and remember, you can trust our certified experts for all your fire restoration needs.
How to Put Out a Grease Fire in 5 Steps
- Turn off the source of the heat and cover the fire with a metal lid or cooking sheet—something heavy-duty, that you would use over a high flame burner. Leave this lid or sheet on the fire until it has cooled down.
- DO NOT try to move the pot/pan the fire has started in. Not only could this cause you to get a nasty burn, it could also allow the grease fire to spread further into your kitchen. And even if you do somehow get the pan outside safely, this could end up leading to a bigger fire that may affect your property or the surrounding area.
- DO NOT try to put the fire out with water. You are likely to waste time filling a pot or spraying the fire with your faucet, when you could be spending time following the steps below to put the fire out.
- If the fire is small enough, pour some baking soda on it to help smother the flames. Salt (ideally kosher salt) can also be used to manage a grease fire in a pinch. DO NOT use baking powder, flower, or any other powders resembling baking soda/salt, as using these compounds could actually make the fire worse.
- If the fire will not go out by pouring baking soda or salt on it, use a Class B dry chemical fire extinguisher. These fire extinguishers are extremely easy to find online or in your local hardware store, and are a smart, affordable safety purchase for every responsible homeowner.
